BOYNE CITY TO CHARLEVOIX TRAIL
This beautiful 14-mile trail currently exists only in the mind’s eye. Conceptual engineering is already well along on a route that will follow the Charlevoix-Boyne City Road right of way through Young State Park and Horton Bay and connect to the Little Traverse Wheelway near the Charlevoix Country Club.
Engineering studies are ongoing and progress is being made. Eventually, we are hoping to link Charlevoix with Elk Rapids and then south to a connection with the Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails (TART) near Williamsburg.
We received good news in September, 2006 when the Charlevoix Board of Commissioners reversed an earlier decision and voted to accept ownership and maintenance responsibilities for the trail. The board accepted the arguments of County Planner and TOMTC regional representative Larry Sullivan that financial responsibility to the county would not be onerous and that the trail would promote tourism and a higher quality of life for all. We expect that grant applications for construction to be made in spring, 2008.
Since then more good news. The City of Boyne City has agreed to be the transportation enhancement grant applicant for an all-asphalt trail that it now expects to submit in April, 2008.
