The scenic rail-trail has been undergoing resurfacing work, but is now back in shape to accommodate those looking to enjoy the Northern Michigan outdoors. The Gaylord-to-Mackinaw rail-trail is open to snowmobile use in the winter, and is popular with hikers and bikers, according to Robin Pearson, DNR recreational specialist. The use of wheeled motorized vehicles is prohibited. Although the resurfacing project has been completed, there are a couple other improvement projects slated for completion this fall. One project will get under way three miles north of Gaylord. A tunnel is being installed under Parmater Road to provide safe crossing for trail users, said Pearson. The other project will deal with water drainage and runoff. A project to direct rain or water runoff from damaging the trail surface is under way behind the Depot Building in Topinabee, five miles north of Indian River, Pearson explained. Pearson also noted that trail users are being asked to watch for construction equipment and materials while these important projects are being completed. The fall colors are currently in full force and Pearson said the rail-trail is a great place to take in the autumn beauty. The public should view the fall colors and visit the communities along the trail where many offer public parking, picnic tables, river-front settings, restrooms and other helpful amenities for trail users, She said. Trail users can access the trail in the communities of Gaylord, Vanderbilt, Wolverine, Indian River, Topinabee, Cheboygan and Mackinaw City. A formal ribbon cutting ceremony is planned by Top of Michigan Trails Council in spring of 2008. 06/05/2008 Riding the Trails 03/26/2008 Airport to Harbor Springs Segment of Little Traverse Wheelway set for Construction in August 12/17/2007 Setting the Record Straight 12/12/2007 Petoskey Park Study Includes Trails 10/24/2007 Where there's a Wheel, there's a Way 10/18/2007 Rail-Trail to be Officially Re-Opened 10/16/2007 Wheelway to be Closed for Repairs 10/03/2007 Gaylord to Mackinaw Trail Open for Riding 05/20/2007 Wheelway Needs Better Maintenance 03/12/2007 Get out and Bike on the Wheelway 12/27/2006 Vandals Attack Signs Along Mullet Lake Trail |
