SUMMARY:Tap Into the Trails
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to celebrate all things trails in Cheboygan County with Tap Into the Trails. Among trail activities that day will be a fun run hosted by Top of Michigan Trails Council. Registration opens June 1. \n  \nThere will also be a bike ride from Cheboygan to Little Traverse Conservancy’s Hoffius Preserve on Lake Huron. Details: \nRide the North Central State Trail to the Barbara Hoffius Preserve and Back \nBeginning at 8:30 am at Festival Square Anne Ann Fleming will lead a bike ride north on the North Central State Trail to and back from the Hoffius Preserve just off US 23. The total round trip distance is 15 1/2 miles. A volunteer will sweep to make sure no one is left behind. Once at the Preserve bikes will be left at the entrance and riders will walk about 1/2 mile to the shore of Lake Huron where the beauty of the Lake can be appreciated. A volunteer will stay with the bikes. \nWhile the trail is flat\, riders should be prepared to ride the distance comfortably. It is not a ride for young children. Since the path to the shore of Lake Huron includes steps and uneven ground\, comfortable walking shoes are advised. Helmets are encouraged.

DESCRIPTION:This is the 14th year for this fun and exciting event in Indian River. Come to compete or come just for the fun of it. Kayaking on the beautiful Indian River and biking on the North Central state trail makes for a great event. \nEvent details and schedule\n  \n\nThe 14th Annual Kayak Bike Biathlon takes place on Sunday\, July 18\, 2021 from 9AM to 11AM.\n\n\nCheck-in begins at 8 AM at DeVoe Public Beach in Indian River.The event is limited to the first 100 registered participants.\n\n\nParticipants enter for fun\, fitness\, and/or competition.\n\n\nThe course begins with 2.24 miles of kayaking on the beautiful and historic Inland Waterway (Burt Lake and the Indian River).\n\n\nThe course continues with 11.68 miles of bicycling on the scenic North Central State Trail\, which is crushed lime-stone (not recommended for extremely narrow tires).\n\n\nThe start is at DeVoe Beach at 9AM. The transition from kayaking to biking is also at DeVoe Beach. The finish-line is near the Chamber of Commerce Building in Indian River. Refreshments\, awards\, and prizes are back at DeVoe Beach. The award ceremony begins at 11AM.\n\n\nRegistration includes free T-shirt and free refreshments.\n\n\nBeautiful wood plaques will be awarded to the top finishers in each age/gender category.\n\n\nAll participants will have a chance to win up to $1000 in donated prizes.\n\n\nAll proceeds this year will go to the construction of the new Burt Lake Bike Trail and the grooming of the Wildwood Hills Pathway Cross Country Ski Trails.\n\n\nParticipants must provide bicycle and proper helmet.\n\n\nParticipants must provide kayak with paddle\, and Coast Guard approved life-jacket .\n\n\nFor more information or to volunteer for this event contact Jess Miller\, 231-268-9349 or Margie Reh\, 517-896-1209 or email IRBiathlon@gmail.com.\n\n\nThis event is a fundraiser. 100% of the proceeds are donated to maintain quality trails in our local area. SUMMARY:Harbor Springs Cycling Classic
DESCRIPTION:            \n2020 marks the 30th year for this cycling event which is organized by Birchwood Inn\, an iconic lodging establishment located on M 119 north of Harbor Springs. Frank Shumway\, owner of the Inn\, welcomes cyclists to come and be a part of this event\, which features 20-\, 45- and 60-mile road routes\, and options for routes along paved trails that are part of Top of Michigan Trails Council’s network in Northern Michigan. \nThe road routes all encompass at least part of the famous “Tunnel of Trees” on M 119. The 20-mile route goes north from the Birchwood Inn to Cross Village and back. The other routes follow local roads and then return south on M 119 along the lake. Both Classic rides (June 1 and September 7 this year) enjoy lighter auto traffic on this route because of their timing during our “shoulder season.” \nThe paved trail option is perfect for folks who don’t feel comfortable riding on the road. Those cyclists will start at Reynold’s Field (the beginning point of the Little Traverse Wheelway in Harbor Springs) and will pedal toward Petoskey. The Top of Michigan Trails Council’s Trail Center at 1687 M 119 is a great place to stop for a rest on the way to some sweet cycling rewards at the Dairy Queen (on the North Western State Trail near Alanson) or Kilwin’s (on the Wheelway). \nAll riders meet at Birchwood Inn on Saturday morning\, where Bill Prall\, Trails Council Safety and Maintenance Director\, will be available to check out bikes for mechanical and safety issues. Then it’s off to follow your chosen route. There will be food stops along the routes\, and Bill will also be offering SAG services in case you have mechanical issues enroute. A delicious lunch will await all participants at Birchwood Inn from noon to 3:00 p.m. Birchwood also offers a dip in their pool or the use of their showers after your ride to cool off. \nDon’t miss this great “up north” cycling experience! SUMMARY:Harbor Springs Cycling Classic
DESCRIPTION:            \n2020 marks the 30th year for this cycling event which is organized by Birchwood Inn\, an iconic lodging establishment located on M 119 north of Harbor Springs. Frank Shumway\, owner of the Inn\, welcomes cyclists to come and be a part of this event\, which features 20-\, 45- and 60-mile road routes\, and options for routes along paved trails that are part of Top of Michigan Trails Council’s network in Northern Michigan. \nThe road routes all encompass at least part of the famous “Tunnel of Trees” on M 119. The 20-mile route goes north from the Birchwood Inn to Cross Village and back. The other routes follow local roads and then return south on M 119 along the lake. Both Classic rides (June 1 and September 7 this year) enjoy lighter auto traffic on this route because of their timing during our “shoulder season.” \nThe paved trail option is perfect for folks who don’t feel comfortable riding on the road. Those cyclists will start at Reynold’s Field (the beginning point of the Little Traverse Wheelway in Harbor Springs) and will pedal toward Petoskey. The Top of Michigan Trails Council’s Trail Center at 1687 M 119 is a great place to stop for a rest on the way to some sweet cycling rewards at the Dairy Queen (on the North Western State Trail near Alanson) or Kilwin’s (on the Wheelway). \nAll riders meet at Birchwood Inn on Saturday morning\, where Bill Prall\, Trails Council Safety and Maintenance Director\, will be available to check out bikes for mechanical and safety issues. Then it’s off to follow your chosen route. There will be food stops along the routes\, and Bill will also be offering SAG services in case you have mechanical issues enroute. DESCRIPTION:While the Marathon is canceled this year due to closures along the Little Traverse Wheelway\, the Half Marathon\, 10K and two 5ks are on schedule and going strong. \nThe half marathon will start in Petoskey’s Bayfront Park\, highlighting the Bear River Trail in downtown Petoskey before jumping on the Wheelway towards Magnus Park\, then passing back through Bayfront Park before running around the bay and into Harbor Springs. \nThe 10K run/walk starts at 8:30 am\, in Harbor Springs\, where it will also finish. \nThe Charlevoix 5K race will begin on Michigan Ave near West Dixon Ave at 8:00 am. DESCRIPTION:“I am fairly new to the sport of bicycling. The Lake to Lake Tour this fall was my first time riding for any distance and I was a bit nervous before starting this event. I have to say that I plan on going back every year from now on. The Trails Council was so organized and helpful. Our group was so impressed with how well they thought of every little detail. They were waiting for us at every checkpoint with water and trail mix. We felt safe and looked after. The trails were absolutely beautiful. Our group made such precious memories. My favorite part was the personal touch in each small town. The meals were fabulous and the hosts were so proud and happy to show off their communities. This trip was the highlight of my fall. Participants have the opportunity to ride from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan\, primarily on dedicated bike trails.  \n19 Bike Tour Registration and Waiver \n19 L2L brochure \nThe 2019 Lake to Lake Tour will begin on Friday morning\, September 13 at Petoskey’s Bayfront Park. From there\, you\, your gear and your bike will be transported to Alpena where you will dip your back tire in Lake Huron. The tour will follow the North Eastern State Trail to a lunch stop in Metz\, then on to the Nettie Bay Lodge (Hawks) where you’ll spend the night in a rustic hunting/fishing lodge. On Saturday the tour follows the NEST to Cheboygan\, where lodging will be provided at the Best Western hotel\, and you’ll enjoy a reception featuring local beer\, followed by dinner on your own in Cheboygan. On Sunday\, the tour will follow the North Central State Trail to Mackinaw City at the very top of the lower peninsula of Michigan and then its south on the North Western State Trail through Pellston and Alanson to just outside of Petoskey\, where you will end the day by pedaling on the Little Traverse Wheelway for three miles to Bayfront Park. There you will celebrate your successful trip by dipping your front tire in Lake Michigan. \n\n\n\n\nIncluded in the tour cost are lodging\, transportation to Alpena\, day-to-day transport of any gear you don’t carry on your bike\, SAG support\, and volunteer riders to assure you a safe and enjoyable ride. Meals included in the registration price will be lunch and dinner on Friday\, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. The total number of riders\, exclusive of volunteers\, will not exceed 35.  The cost for the tour is $525+ (varies depending on your occupancy choice). Your deposit will be counted as your annual membership donation. DESCRIPTION:Kick off June with Smart Commute\, brought to you by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan\nEmmet County’s 2019 Smart Commute Week will be held June 3th – 7th.  During this week\, each day you smart commute – carpool\, ride your bike\, walk\, take EMGO – for any trip instead of use  your car\, not only will you be eligible for free breakfasts at specific locations\, you’ll be saving gas and carbon emissions! \nThe goal of Smart Commute is to promote alternative forms of commuting to school\, work and other activities. Participants are encouraged to walk\, bike\, carpool and–new for this year – use EMGO (Emmet County transit); thereby saving gas and carbon emissions\, and improving their overall health through increased physical activity. This promotion of environmentally and physically healthy forms of transportation organized by the Top of Michigan Trails Council is in its 10th year. \nMany individuals in Emmet County use the Little Traverse Wheelway and the North Western State Trails to commute to and from work and school during the warm-weather months\, and this event inspires others to get on board with finding healthy\, economical and environmentally friendly ways to get around. This year it might also help alleviate traffic due to construction! \nDuring the initial week of Smart Commute\, both individuals and area businesses are encouraged to participate. The goal is to complete as many smart commuting trips as possible\, in order to qualify for a “Smart Commute Certification.” Participants will also enjoy breakfasts graciously provided by area restaurants. Breakfasts will be available Monday through Thursday\, with a final gathering featuring prizes on Friday\, June 7th from 8-9 am. \nLast year\, with participants continuing to document their smart commutes over the summer months\, Smart Commuters covered a lot of ground. They traveled 9\,383 miles\, the distance from here to Australia. Saved 408 Gallons of gasoline\, roughly the amount consumed by an average American in a year. Kept 8\,159 pounds of Co2 out of the atmosphere – roughly the weight of two Ford F-150 trucks. And our best experts figure we generated approximately 3\,756 smiles and that’s only counting direct smiles\, not secondary smiles\, so the true effect could be much higher! DESCRIPTION:This is the second session for this “how-to” workshop.\n\nLearn how to assemble the hub\, spokes and rim to “build” a front wheel. The wheel will be laced with 32 spokes in a three-cross spoke pattern. We will have several “practice wheels” for you to use. You may want to build a front wheel for your own bicycle. You can learn a lot from riding a wheel you have built. For answers regarding the proper size wheel for your bicycle\, please call Bill Prall (231) 838-0741. SUMMARY:Public Open House - Acme to Elk Rapids
DESCRIPTION:Design plans for the section of the Charlevoix – Traverse City trail between Acme and Elk Rapids are underway and we want to hear from you. TART Trails and TOMTC will host a public open house on Wednesday\, February 27 from 5:30 – 7:30pm at the Williamsburg Event Center.\n\nPlease join project leaders for a short presentation on the design plans thus far and review the proposed route alternatives. Participants will be asked to share opportunities\, constraints\, and offer feedback and input into the planning process. For those who cannot attend\, information will be provided online including a public comment form which will be shared with project partners. This planning process is part of the larger Traverse City <==> Charlevoix Trail project. SUMMARY:Wild Woods Loppet
DESCRIPTION:Let the WILD RUMPUS START!\nRegister Here\nHelp raise funds for new grooming equipment for Wildwood Hills Pathway\, while being challenged to ski a longer distance than you normally take on during an average day in the woods! Enjoy groomed classic cross-country ski trails in the company of other supporters. Ski\, have fun and help the Friends of Wildwood Pathway and the Top of Michigan Trails Council raise money to provide new grooming equipment. Michigan Department of Natural Resources runs the groomer on the trails but the Friends of Wildwood pays for that grooming and WE NEED YOUR HELP! \nCheck the map to view 11-\, 9- and 6-mile route options. Of course\, if you’re a true Wild Thing\, you can double up on any of these\, or combine loops!  (Or if 4.5 miles is your goal – that’s great too!) The goal is to challenge you to explore longer and farther than you would normally. Gauge your start time between 9:30 and 11:00 am. Course will be open from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. Lunch will be served from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. \nYes\, there will be a Wild Thing costume contest\, so be creative and amaze us! Here are some traditional Wild Thing ideas. \nAs you ski\, search for Wild Things and wild challenges along the trail.  There will be aid stations where you can rest and refresh with warm drinks and snacks. Remember\, this is not a race! When you safely arrive back at your starting point\, a taco bar lunch and cash bar awaits at the Indian River Golf Club to continue camaraderie with fellow cross-country skiers from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. (Yes\, the food will be “still hot” when you get there!)  Prizes will be awarded at 2:30 pm. \nNon-skiers may join in the fun at lunch for $20 donation. SUMMARY:Wheel Building 101 - Session I
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to assemble the hub\, spokes and rim to “build” a front wheel. The wheel will be laced with 32 spokes in a three-cross spoke pattern. We will have several “practice wheels” for you to use. You may want to build a front wheel for your own bicycle. You can learn a lot from riding a wheel you have built. For answers regarding the proper size wheel for your bicycle\, please call Bill Prall (231) 838-0741. Prall has built over 1\,000 bicycle wheels for racing\, touring and mountain biking\, and has developed a simple method for lacing the spokes from the hub into the rim.\n\nClass will be held over two weeks: Wednesday\, February 20th and Wednesday\, February 27th from 6:30PM to 8:00PM at the Top of Michigan Trail Center\, 1687 M 119\, Petoskey. DESCRIPTION:For the first time\, TOMTC will offer a fall gathering with the purpose of uniting the Friends of Trails (that’s YOU) and connecting you with our plans and dreams\, our amazing programs\, and the story of how our most loved trail came to be.\n\n\nOn Thursday\, October 4 we will gather at the Petoskey Bay View Country Club for a festive celebration of trails. The schedule:\n\n\n5:30: Cocktail hour. Stroll about and view photos and slideshows of our latest accomplishments. Chat with Cindy Okerlund\, our Kids Biking Coordinator; visit Bill Prall\, our Safety and Maintenance Director; snag our staff and board members to share your vision for our trails organization. Free non-alcoholic beverages and hors d’oeuvres; cash bar.\n6:30: Time to feast with friends!
