SUMMARY:Tenth Annual Smart Commute Emmet
DESCRIPTION:Kick off June with Smart Commute\, brought to you by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan\nEmmet County’s 2019 Smart Commute Week will be held June 3th – 7th.  During this week\, each day you smart commute – carpool\, ride your bike\, walk\, take EMGO – for any trip instead of use  your car\, not only will you be eligible for free breakfasts at specific locations\, you’ll be saving gas and carbon emissions! \nThe goal of Smart Commute is to promote alternative forms of commuting to school\, work and other activities. Participants are encouraged to walk\, bike\, carpool and–new for this year – use EMGO (Emmet County transit); thereby saving gas and carbon emissions\, and improving their overall health through increased physical activity. This promotion of environmentally and physically healthy forms of transportation organized by the Top of Michigan Trails Council is in its 10th year. \nMany individuals in Emmet County use the Little Traverse Wheelway and the North Western State Trails to commute to and from work and school during the warm-weather months\, and this event inspires others to get on board with finding healthy\, economical and environmentally friendly ways to get around. This year it might also help alleviate traffic due to construction! \nDuring the initial week of Smart Commute\, both individuals and area businesses are encouraged to participate. The goal is to complete as many smart commuting trips as possible\, in order to qualify for a “Smart Commute Certification.” Participants will also enjoy breakfasts graciously provided by area restaurants. Breakfasts will be available Monday through Thursday\, with a final gathering featuring prizes on Friday\, June 7th from 8-9 am. \nLast year\, with participants continuing to document their smart commutes over the summer months\, Smart Commuters covered a lot of ground. They traveled 9\,383 miles\, the distance from here to Australia. Saved 408 Gallons of gasoline\, roughly the amount consumed by an average American in a year. Kept 8\,159 pounds of Co2 out of the atmosphere – roughly the weight of two Ford F-150 trucks. And our best experts figure we generated approximately 3\,756 smiles and that’s only counting direct smiles\, not secondary smiles\, so the true effect could be much higher! SUMMARY:Harbor Springs Cycling Classic
DESCRIPTION:            \n2019 marks the 29th year for this cycling event which is organized by Birchwood Inn\, an iconic lodging establishment located on M 119 north of Harbor Springs. Frank Shumway\, owner of the Inn\, welcomes cyclists to come and be a part of this event\, which features 20-\, 45- and 60-mile road routes\, and options for routes along paved trails that are part of Top of Michigan Trails Council’s network in Northern Michigan. \nThe road routes all encompass at least part of the famous “Tunnel of Trees” on M 119. The 20-mile route goes north from the Birchwood Inn to Cross Village and back. The other routes follow local roads and then return south on M 119 along the lake. Both Classic rides (June 1 and September 7 this year) enjoy lighter auto traffic on this route because of their timing during our “shoulder season.” \nThe paved trail option is perfect for folks who don’t feel comfortable riding on the road. Those cyclists will start at Reynold’s Field (the beginning point of the Little Traverse Wheelway in Harbor Springs) and will pedal toward Petoskey. The Top of Michigan Trails Council’s Trail Center at 1687 M 119 is a great place to stop for a rest on the way to some sweet cycling rewards at the Dairy Queen (on the North Western State Trail near Alanson) or Kilwin’s (on the Wheelway). \nAll riders meet at Birchwood Inn on Saturday morning\, where Bill Prall\, Trails Council Safety and Maintenance Director\, will be available to check out bikes for mechanical and safety issues. Then it’s off to follow your chosen route. There will be food stops along the routes\, and Bill will also be offering SAG services in case you have mechanical issues enroute. A delicious lunch will await all participants at Birchwood Inn from noon to 3:00 p.m. Birchwood also offers a dip in their pool or the use of their showers after your ride to cool off. \nDon’t miss this great “up north” cycling experience! DESCRIPTION:Design plans for the section of the Charlevoix – Traverse City trail between Acme and Elk Rapids are underway and we want to hear from you. TART Trails and TOMTC will host a public open house on Wednesday\, February 27 from 5:30 – 7:30pm at the Williamsburg Event Center.\n\nPlease join project leaders for a short presentation on the design plans thus far and review the proposed route alternatives. Participants will be asked to share opportunities\, constraints\, and offer feedback and input into the planning process. For those who cannot attend\, information will be provided online including a public comment form which will be shared with project partners. This planning process is part of the larger Traverse City <==> Charlevoix Trail project. DESCRIPTION:Let the WILD RUMPUS START!\nRegister Here\nHelp raise funds for new grooming equipment for Wildwood Hills Pathway\, while being challenged to ski a longer distance than you normally take on during an average day in the woods! Enjoy groomed classic cross-country ski trails in the company of other supporters. Ski\, have fun and help the Friends of Wildwood Pathway and the Top of Michigan Trails Council raise money to provide new grooming equipment. Michigan Department of Natural Resources runs the groomer on the trails but the Friends of Wildwood pays for that grooming and WE NEED YOUR HELP! \nCheck the map to view 11-\, 9- and 6-mile route options. Of course\, if you’re a true Wild Thing\, you can double up on any of these\, or combine loops!  (Or if 4.5 miles is your goal – that’s great too!) The goal is to challenge you to explore longer and farther than you would normally. Gauge your start time between 9:30 and 11:00 am. Course will be open from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. Lunch will be served from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. \nYes\, there will be a Wild Thing costume contest\, so be creative and amaze us! Here are some traditional Wild Thing ideas. \nAs you ski\, search for Wild Things and wild challenges along the trail.  There will be aid stations where you can rest and refresh with warm drinks and snacks. Remember\, this is not a race! When you safely arrive back at your starting point\, a taco bar lunch and cash bar awaits at the Indian River Golf Club to continue camaraderie with fellow cross-country skiers from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. (Yes\, the food will be “still hot” when you get there!)  Prizes will be awarded at 2:30 pm. \nNon-skiers may join in the fun at lunch for $20 donation. The tour will follow the North Eastern State Trail to a lunch stop in Metz\, then on to the Nettie Bay Lodge (Hawks) where you’ll spend the night in a rustic hunting/fishing lodge. On Saturday the tour follows the NEST to Cheboygan\, where lodging will be provided at the Best Western hotel\, and you’ll travel by boat to dinner on the river. On Sunday\, the tour will follow the North Central State Trail to Mackinaw City\, to the northern terminus of the North Western State Trail. Then it’s south to Petoskey\, where you’ll ride the Little Traverse Wheelway to dip your front tire in Lake Michigan at Bayfront Park. \n\n\n\n\nIncluded in the tour cost are lodging\, transportation to Alpena\, day-to-day transport of any gear you don’t carry on your bike\, SAG support\, and volunteer riders to assure you a safe and enjoyable ride. Meals included in the registration price will be dinner on Friday and breakfast and dinner on Saturday. The total number of riders\, exclusive of volunteers\, will not exceed 30.  The cost for the tour is $450. Your deposit will be counted as your annual membership donation. All funds in excess of actual costs will be credited as a donation to the trail advocacy efforts of TOMTC. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:This is the third in a series of outings for kids ages 7 – 12 this July! This outing will originate at the Packy Offield Trail Center\, 1687 M 119 in Petoskey. Kids may bring their own bike helmets\, but will use a bike from our fleet of kids bikes. Before they ride they will be fitted for a bike and helmet\, learn a number of bike safety rules\, and learn about their route by studying a map of the route to their destination. \nFor this outing\, the group will pedal from the Top of Michigan Trails Council headquarters along the North Western State Trail.  After 3.5 miles\, they’ll reach their destination: the Oden State Fish Hatchery. Staff there will give the group a tour\, followed by a break with a healthy snack and water before the trip back to the Trail Center. DESCRIPTION:Five Top of Michigan Rotary Clubs will be participating in a pledge bicycle ride\, raising money to go towards Polio eradication worldwide. Top of Michigan Trails Council is partnering with them for this event\, and invites all of its members to participate. \nRotarians and Trails Council friends can participate in this event for a minimum $25.00 fee; though we would like to have you raise more pledge money. SUMMARY:9th Annual Emmet County Smart Commute Week
DESCRIPTION:Emmet County Smart Commute Week will be held June 4th – 7th.  The goal of this event is to promote alternative forms of commuting to school\, work and other activities. Participants are encouraged to walk\, bike or carpool; saving gas and carbon emissions\, and improving their overall health through increased physical activity.  \nThis promotion of environmentally and physically healthy forms of transportation was inaugurated in 2010 by the Top of Michigan Trails Council as a way of promoting the practical use of this area’s trail network. Many individuals use the Little Traverse Wheelway and the North Western State Trails to commute to and from work and school during the warm-weather months.   \nIn 2017 Smart Commute was extended over the summer months\, with a celebration held in early October\, and 170 individuals completed 2\,416 trips during the season\, Collectively\, smart commuters traveled 17\,419 miles\, preventing 15\,147 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. \nIf you would like to get involved as an individual or as a team\, contact Sue.

DESCRIPTION:Stafford’s Top of Michigan Marathon – A USATF CERTIFIED COURSE to benefit the Top of Michigan Trails Council and Petoskey High School sports teams. \nIn addition to the marathon\, the race festival includes a 10K race/walk\, two 5K race/walk events and a half marathon. \nThe marathon race will be run on a beautiful course made of asphalt that starts in Charlevoix\, follows the coast line to Petoskey\, and finishes in Harbor Springs. The trail is an excellent venue for runners stepping up to a marathon or seasoned runners looking for a fast time. The trail is relatively flat and perfect for getting a qualifying time for other races. There is a grassy half-mile section run on the bluff in Bay View (to avoid pedestrian traffic). DESCRIPTION:he Gravel Grinder is a gravel road race like nothing you can imagine. This event is always the first Saturday in October (October 7th 2017) and is limited to 2000 riders. \nThe Gravel Grinder is essentially three races in one. The 18 mile race is flat and easy\, a great race for beginners or even the kids in the family. The 40 mile race is a gravel race best suited for Cross bikes. The seasonal roads have been removed for this route. Expect lots of fast gravel mixed with some tough climbs. The 60 mile race is for the person who wants a true challenge. You get five monster climbs\, lots of fast gravel roads\, multiple sections of tough seasonal roads which have sand\, mud and rocks and also a white knuckle descent. Whatever bike/tire you choose it will be the wrong one at some point. This route will test your mental sanity.

DESCRIPTION:For Brochure Click Here.        To Register complete this form. \nWith the completion of the North Western State Trail in 2016\, the possibility of traveling from one Great Lake to another on a series of rail trails became a reality. This bicycle tour gives participants the opportunity to dip their back wheel in Lake Huron and two days later to dip their front wheel in Lake Michigan.  \nThe tour will begin on Friday morning\, September 22 at the headquarters of Top of Michigan Trails Council\, 1687 M 119 in Petoskey. From there\, you\, your gear and your bike will be transported to Alpena where you will dip your back tire in Lake Huron. Then the group will ride on the Alpena Bi-Path for 1 1/2 miles to the new trailhead on Woodard near Alpena’s Event Complex (APlex). From there you will begin riding on the North Eastern State Trail (NEST) for 37 miles at your own speed. you will have the opportunity to stop at Metz for lunch (lunch is on your own). The trailhead at Metz has a wonderful display of historic markers commemorating the fire of 1908 that claimed 37 lives. A local historian will give further details regarding the fire. \n\nYour destination will be Nettie Bay Lodge\, about a mile off the trail. Nettie Bay Lodge offers comfortable rustic cabins on Nettie Lake\, which is well-known for its loons. Dinner will be in the Lodge’s dining room. After dinner a local naturalist will give a presentation on the local loon poulation.\n\n \n\n\nSaturday will begin with breakfast at the Lodge and then back to the NEST and a scenic 41-mile ride to Cheboygan. You will go through Millersburg where you may stop at the depot-turned-museum\, and then on to Onaway\, Tower\, and Aloha. Lunch can be purchased at the Aloha village store. The day will end in Cheboygan where the group will stay at the Best Western. A group dinner is being planned at Pier 33 and\, if our plans work out\, you’ll be transported to the restaurant by boat. Matt Friday will provide an overview of Cheboygan’s history during the dinner.\n\n\nSunday will begin with breakfast on your own in Cheboygan before you ride the North Central State Trail and North Western State Trail for 50 miles (through Mackinaw City\, Pellston\, Brutus and Alanson). Lunch will be on your own at one of several restaurants along the NWST. The tour will end in Petoskey\, where you’ll celebrate by dipping your front tire in Lake Michigan. The conclusion of the ride will be close to where your car is parked.\n\n\n\nIncluded in the tour cost is transportation to Alpena\, day-to-day transport of any gear you don’t carry on your bike\, SAG support\, and volunteer riders to assure you a safe and enjoyable ride. Lodging will also be included. Meals included in the registration price will be dinner on Friday and breakfast and dinner on Saturday.
