SUMMARY:Bike-a-Palooza!
DESCRIPTION:Emmet County Parks and Recreation is joining forces with Top of Michigan Trails Council to host a fun family event to raise awareness of the Little Traverse Wheelway. Bike-a-Palooza will be held at the Emmet County Fairgrounds on Sunday\, June 18 from 2 – 4 p.m. The event is free to the public\, and will offer a kids bike rodeo\, bicycle demos\, free bike safety checks\, and free pizza\, salad and root beer floats. A recommended donation of $5.00 (individual) or $10.00 (family) will be requested. \nThe event begins with a Fathers Day family bike ride from East Park pavilion. Registration will take place between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m. Family members will be given a token for a free ice cream cone at Bob-In Again. Family cycling groups will travel the Wheelway to the Bob-In at their own pace\, and can then return to enjoy the fun at the Fairgrounds. \nFor many cyclists in our area\, the Wheelway is a favorite route that connects the communities of Charlevoix\, Petoskey-Bay Harbor and Harbor Springs. This 26-mile paved trail is also a destination for many visitors to our area. \nThis event is a celebration of the trail\, but is also meant to point out the need for funding for maintenance. The Parks and Recreation Department and the Trails Council have been meeting in the past months to find ways to approach costly repair needs\, including root cutting to avoid root eruptions that damage sections of the trail and make it dangerous for cyclists. \nFor more information about Bike-a-Palooza call 231.348.8280. \n\n\nEvent poster: 17 poster \n

SUMMARY:Petoskey Trail Town Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Petoskey Parks and Recreation Department and the North Country Trail Association will hold the 5thAnnual “Petoskey Trail Town Celebration” in Pennsylvania Park between Lake Street and Mitchell Street on National Trails Day\, Saturday\, June 3\, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. “National Trails Day” was established in 1991 by the American Hiking Society as a celebration of America’s magnificent Trail System\, and occurs annually on the first Saturday in June. \nTop of Michigan Trails Council will be involved as a sponsor of this celebration of trails in our area. The North Country Trail shares parts of the Little Traverse Wheelway and the North Western State Trail\, so we will celebrate the Trail Town status of Petoskey on Saturday by hosting a “Trail Rally” for families and other groups that want to get on bikes and explore our shared part of the trail. \nWatch for your list of challenges on this page after 3:00 p.m. Friday\, June 2. Then head out on the Wheelway to meet the challenges. You’ll want to bring a friend\, since some challenges require at least two people. And you’ll need a cell phone\, since some require photo proof! \nTurn in the solutions to your challenges between 10 and noon on Saturday\, June 3 at the TOMTC table in Pennslyvania Park. All with correct solutions will be entered into a prize drawing during the FREE lunch at 12:30 p.m. \nTop of Michigan Trails Council \nNational Trails Day Trail Rally on the Little Traverse Wheelway \nPlease note: \nYou may use this list\, or print an identical one: Top of Michigan Trails Council Trail rally. \nThere are two challenge levels for the Trail Rally.  One is abbreviated for families with small children that can’t easily pedal from Bayfront Park to D&W. The extended challenge list includes everything on List I and also List II! A good place for everyone to start their challenge is at the parking lot behind the Historical Museum at Petoskey’s Bayfront Park. \nList I (for families with small kids) \n\nHow many steps are there on the stairway from Lake Street to the Historical Museum parking lot?\nThere is some outdoor history to be found on the trail near the museum! Name one of the passenger ships that used to take visitors to Petoskey “back in the day.”\nThere is a memorial garden by the waterfall. The garden is in memory of a man born in 1901. What is his MIDDLE name?\nTake a picture of at least one person in your party on the middle landing of the stairs coming down to the waterfall from Sunset Park.\nNear the restroom at the end of the Bayfront Park drive\, there is a map of the Little Traverse Wheelway. How many parking areas are there along this bike path?\nBy the restroom there is a list of invasive species on a kiosk. Name one!\nTake a picture of at least one of your party\, with a bicycle\, by the “No Teaming or Driving” sign.\nTake a picture of at least one member of your party in front of the Bob-In Again sign. NOTE: You’ll have to get off the Wheelway to do this.\n\n  \nList II (for everyone else!) \nAll of the above challenges\, plus \n\nHow many tennis courts are there by the waterfront in Bay View?\nOne of the cottages on Grove Street has a name. What is it?\nThe Fettis-McCue Trailhead is named after two founders of the Top of Michigan Trails Council. What are their first names?\nOn the back of the D&W store is a mural. Take a picture with as many of your party as possible in front of the mural.\n\nYou’re done! Come back to Pennsylvania Park with your answers!
