SUMMARY:2025 Tap Into the Trails 5k and 10k
DESCRIPTION:The Cheboygan area is excited for you to explore all of the trails in their region. Join us for the second annual Tap into the Trails 5k or 10k to explore Cheboygan and the trails available to you from the heart of town. \nMore details about the event’s other activities are coming soon. \nThe Top of Michigan Trails Council’s 5k and 10k run/walk will illustrate how easy it is to access the North Central State Trail from downtown Cheboygan. These routes offer a fairly flat course on both pavement and crushed limestone. \nThe 10k course will highlight both the North Central State Trail and the North Eastern State Trail\, starting from Festival Square in Downtown Cheboygan. Please note\, a portion of this course will be on road. The Cheboygan Police Department will help keep traffic at bay to keep you safe. \nEvent proceeds will benefit trails in northern Michigan. \nIn addition to the run/walk event\, the Cheboygan Trails Council will lead the Barbara C. Hoffius Nature Preserve Bicycle Ride Tour. \nBeginning at 8:30 a.m. at Festival Square\, Jim Conboy will lead an out-and-back bike ride north on the North Central State Trail to the Hoffius Preserve just off U.S. 23. The total round trip distance is 15.5 miles. A volunteer will sweep to make sure no one is left behind. Once at the preserve\, bikes will be left at the entrance with a volunteer\, and riders will walk about a half mile down to the shore of Lake Huron\, where the beauty of the lake can be appreciated. Total time for this ride is approximately 2.75-3 hours. \nWhile the trail is flat\, riders should be prepared to ride the distance comfortably. It is not a ride for young children. Since the path to the shore of Lake Huron includes steps and uneven ground\, comfortable walking shoes are advised. Helmets are encouraged.

DESCRIPTION:Participant slots are filling quickly for the Indian River Kayak-Bike Biathlon on Sunday\, July 20\, 9-11 a.m.\, at DeVoe Beach\, Burt Lake\, in Indian River. \nAs of this posting\, only 63 of 100 participant slots remained unfilled. Register here. \nThis is the 18th year for this fun and exciting event. \nParticipants can enter for fun\, fitness\, and/or competition. \nThe course begins with 2.24 miles of kayaking on the beautiful and historic Inland Waterway (Burt Lake and the Indian River). The course ends with 11.68 miles of bicycling on the scenic North Central State Trail\, which is crushed lime-stone (not recommended for extremely narrow tires). \nThe start is at DeVoe Beach at 9 a.m. The transition from kayaking to biking is also at DeVoe Beach. The finish line is near the Chamber of Commerce building. Refreshments\, awards\, and prizes are at the beach at 11 a.m.

DESCRIPTION:Imagine a Michigan where trails seamlessly connect communities\, promote health and wellness\, and fuel economic growth. This is the vision behind Michigan Trails 2050\, a collaborative initiative led by the Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance (MTGA) to create a roadmap for the future of trails in our state. \n \nTrails are unique in the way that collaboration and coordination is required to plan\, build\, and promote sustainable use and maintenance. A statewide trail planning and public engagement effort at that scale last took place in 2007\, creating the “Connecting Michigan” plan. This update to the plan will involve diverse stakeholders from across the state representing government\, community organizations\, businesses\, and public and private funders. \nAs part of this statewide effort\, we’re seeking to create space for better communication and coordination between public and private stakeholders\, to build a shared plan and vision that integrates trails more effectively with local\, regional\, and state master plans. \nMTGA is holding six regional summits across the state to bring together important perspectives from each part of Michigan. Each summit will include a trail experience\, a panel of regional experts\, and a featured speaker. \nThe nearest regional summit is July 8 at Treetops Resort in Gaylord.

SUMMARY:Third Annual Lynn Duse Memorial Kids' Bike Fest
DESCRIPTION:The third annual Lynn Duse Memorial Kids’ Bike Fest will take place at the Little Traverse History Museum in Petoskey’s Bayfront Park on Saturday\, June 7\, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the Little Traverse Historical Society and Top of Michigan Trails Council. \nRegistration is 10-11 a.m. The bike parade will be in two segments this year\, with kids second grade and younger starting at 11 a.m.\, and kids third grade and older beginning at 11:30 a.m. The parade takes place on the Little Traverse Wheelway\, starting at the museum and heading east toward Lime Kiln Pond. Helmets are required. A fleet of loaner bikes and helmets will be available for kids who are visiting the area\, or don’t have their own. \n\n \nLynn Duse \n\nAs in past years\, a variety of booths and activities are planned\, including a free bike decorating station courtesy of Crooked Tree Arts Center. Prizes will be awarded for best decorated bikes. Top prize is a new Giant bicycle\, donated by Latitude 45 Bicycles and Fitness in Petoskey. \nThere will also be free bike safety inspections\, model trains display\, a Little Traverse History Museum scavenger hunt\, and more. Free healthy snacks are being provided by Grain Train Natural Foods Co-op. \nSpectators are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs for the bike parade. Parade judges\, who will dress in period clothing\, include Petoskey Mayor John Murphy and others. \nThe idea for this event was conceived by the late Lynn (McCartney) Duse\, a second generation owner and operator of the Circus Shop\, a former children’s clothing store on Mitchell Street in downtown Petoskey. \nUnfortunately\, Duse died in 2023\, not long after presenting her kids’ bike parade idea to the historical society\, of which she’d been a longtime and active member. \n According to her daughter\, Marnie\, Lynn’s conception of the event is just another of her civic-minded projects designed to showcase the community amid the fun and fanfare of a childrens’ parade of colorfully decorated bicycles. \n“She enjoyed welcoming children and their parents in the Circus Shop\, and promoting a Kids’ Bike Fest reflects her love of children and their joy. Lynn would be so delighted at how well it’s being organized and the interest of the Top of Michigan Trails Council and the Little Traverse Historical Society and the other community organizations involved. It is truly impressive how well it’s been organized.”

DESCRIPTION:This is the 14th year for this fun and exciting event in Indian River. Come to compete or come just for the fun of it. Kayaking on the beautiful Indian River and biking on the North Central state trail makes for a great event. \nEvent details and schedule\n  \n\nThe 14th Annual Kayak Bike Biathlon takes place on Sunday\, July 18\, 2021 from 9AM to 11AM.\n\n\nCheck-in begins at 8 AM at DeVoe Public Beach in Indian River.The event is limited to the first 100 registered participants.\n\n\nParticipants enter for fun\, fitness\, and/or competition.\n\n\nThe course begins with 2.24 miles of kayaking on the beautiful and historic Inland Waterway (Burt Lake and the Indian River).\n\n\nThe course continues with 11.68 miles of bicycling on the scenic North Central State Trail\, which is crushed lime-stone (not recommended for extremely narrow tires).\n\n\nThe start is at DeVoe Beach at 9AM. The transition from kayaking to biking is also at DeVoe Beach. The finish-line is near the Chamber of Commerce Building in Indian River. Refreshments\, awards\, and prizes are back at DeVoe Beach. DESCRIPTION:            \n2020 marks the 30th year for this cycling event which is organized by Birchwood Inn\, an iconic lodging establishment located on M 119 north of Harbor Springs. Frank Shumway\, owner of the Inn\, welcomes cyclists to come and be a part of this event\, which features 20-\, 45- and 60-mile road routes\, and options for routes along paved trails that are part of Top of Michigan Trails Council’s network in Northern Michigan. \nThe road routes all encompass at least part of the famous “Tunnel of Trees” on M 119. The 20-mile route goes north from the Birchwood Inn to Cross Village and back. The other routes follow local roads and then return south on M 119 along the lake. Both Classic rides (June 1 and September 7 this year) enjoy lighter auto traffic on this route because of their timing during our “shoulder season.” \nThe paved trail option is perfect for folks who don’t feel comfortable riding on the road. Those cyclists will start at Reynold’s Field (the beginning point of the Little Traverse Wheelway in Harbor Springs) and will pedal toward Petoskey. The Top of Michigan Trails Council’s Trail Center at 1687 M 119 is a great place to stop for a rest on the way to some sweet cycling rewards at the Dairy Queen (on the North Western State Trail near Alanson) or Kilwin’s (on the Wheelway). \nAll riders meet at Birchwood Inn on Saturday morning\, where Bill Prall\, Trails Council Safety and Maintenance Director\, will be available to check out bikes for mechanical and safety issues. Then it’s off to follow your chosen route. There will be food stops along the routes\, and Bill will also be offering SAG services in case you have mechanical issues enroute. A delicious lunch will await all participants at Birchwood Inn from noon to 3:00 p.m. Birchwood also offers a dip in their pool or the use of their showers after your ride to cool off. \nDon’t miss this great “up north” cycling experience! DESCRIPTION:“I am fairly new to the sport of bicycling. The Lake to Lake Tour this fall was my first time riding for any distance and I was a bit nervous before starting this event. I have to say that I plan on going back every year from now on. The Trails Council was so organized and helpful. Our group was so impressed with how well they thought of every little detail. They were waiting for us at every checkpoint with water and trail mix. We felt safe and looked after. The trails were absolutely beautiful. Our group made such precious memories. My favorite part was the personal touch in each small town. The meals were fabulous and the hosts were so proud and happy to show off their communities. This trip was the highlight of my fall. Participants have the opportunity to ride from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan\, primarily on dedicated bike trails.  \n19 Bike Tour Registration and Waiver \n19 L2L brochure \nThe 2019 Lake to Lake Tour will begin on Friday morning\, September 13 at Petoskey’s Bayfront Park. From there\, you\, your gear and your bike will be transported to Alpena where you will dip your back tire in Lake Huron. The tour will follow the North Eastern State Trail to a lunch stop in Metz\, then on to the Nettie Bay Lodge (Hawks) where you’ll spend the night in a rustic hunting/fishing lodge. On Saturday the tour follows the NEST to Cheboygan\, where lodging will be provided at the Best Western hotel\, and you’ll enjoy a reception featuring local beer\, followed by dinner on your own in Cheboygan. On Sunday\, the tour will follow the North Central State Trail to Mackinaw City at the very top of the lower peninsula of Michigan and then its south on the North Western State Trail through Pellston and Alanson to just outside of Petoskey\, where you will end the day by pedaling on the Little Traverse Wheelway for three miles to Bayfront Park. There you will celebrate your successful trip by dipping your front tire in Lake Michigan. \n\n\n\n\nIncluded in the tour cost are lodging\, transportation to Alpena\, day-to-day transport of any gear you don’t carry on your bike\, SAG support\, and volunteer riders to assure you a safe and enjoyable ride. Meals included in the registration price will be lunch and dinner on Friday\, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. The total number of riders\, exclusive of volunteers\, will not exceed 35.  The cost for the tour is $525+ (varies depending on your occupancy choice). Your deposit will be counted as your annual membership donation. All funds in excess of actual costs will be credited as a donation to the trail advocacy efforts of TOMTC. \nSee links above for brochure and registration form. \n\n

SUMMARY:Tenth Annual Smart Commute Emmet
DESCRIPTION:Kick off June with Smart Commute\, brought to you by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan\nEmmet County’s 2019 Smart Commute Week will be held June 3th – 7th.  During this week\, each day you smart commute – carpool\, ride your bike\, walk\, take EMGO – for any trip instead of use  your car\, not only will you be eligible for free breakfasts at specific locations\, you’ll be saving gas and carbon emissions! \nThe goal of Smart Commute is to promote alternative forms of commuting to school\, work and other activities. Participants are encouraged to walk\, bike\, carpool and–new for this year – use EMGO (Emmet County transit); thereby saving gas and carbon emissions\, and improving their overall health through increased physical activity. This promotion of environmentally and physically healthy forms of transportation organized by the Top of Michigan Trails Council is in its 10th year. \nMany individuals in Emmet County use the Little Traverse Wheelway and the North Western State Trails to commute to and from work and school during the warm-weather months\, and this event inspires others to get on board with finding healthy\, economical and environmentally friendly ways to get around. This year it might also help alleviate traffic due to construction! \nDuring the initial week of Smart Commute\, both individuals and area businesses are encouraged to participate. The goal is to complete as many smart commuting trips as possible\, in order to qualify for a “Smart Commute Certification.” Participants will also enjoy breakfasts graciously provided by area restaurants. Breakfasts will be available Monday through Thursday\, with a final gathering featuring prizes on Friday\, June 7th from 8-9 am. \nLast year\, with participants continuing to document their smart commutes over the summer months\, Smart Commuters covered a lot of ground. They traveled 9\,383 miles\, the distance from here to Australia. Saved 408 Gallons of gasoline\, roughly the amount consumed by an average American in a year. Kept 8\,159 pounds of Co2 out of the atmosphere – roughly the weight of two Ford F-150 trucks. And our best experts figure we generated approximately 3\,756 smiles and that’s only counting direct smiles\, not secondary smiles\, so the true effect could be much higher!
