07 Jun FYI for Mackinaw City Trail Users
This summer MDOT is undertaking a project that will impact access to Mackinaw City and consequently access to the trailhead for the North Western and North Central State Trails. The trailhead and trails will remain open but detours and traffic should be expected.
June 14-16 I-75 will be CLOSED with a detour through Mackinaw City.
The North Central State Trail itself will remain accessible at all times, including the crossing of US 23 at the south end of Mackinaw City:
“US-23 is being reconstructed as part of this project from I-75 going easterly to just south east of Huron Ave, in the Village of Mackinaw City. This work will require intermittent single lane closures and/or traffic shifts on US-23 from now until Labor Day Weekend, however, on Labor Day Weekend all lanes of traffic are required to be open to vehicular traffic. Per MDOT’s restrictions, pedestrian access to the North Central State Trail is required to be maintained at all times and no equipment is to be staged, stored, or parked on recreational properties which includes this trail. Therefore the trail should be open and accessible at all times. However, there will be minor grading and paving work at the interface of the trail and the pavement edge that will be staged from time to time as work progresses at this interface and will cause minor temporary interruptions to bicycle and/or pedestrian traffic, but shouldn’t case much disruption to access to the trail or trail users. “ (emphasis added)
