Elk Rapids Trail Team update: The Elk Rapids Trail Team, full of long-term advocates for the Nakwema Trailway met in February to discuss trail-side signage as a component of its Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) application. This TAP grant opportunity is focused on Phase 1 of Maple Bay to Elk Rapids, which spans from South Bayshore Drive to Townline Road. The team discussed the need for clear signage with helpful directions, local amenities, and a distinct Nakwema Trailway brand.
Torch Lake Trail Team update: The Torch Lake Trail Team met at the end of February. We discussed key takeaways from the Community Trail Update event in January where the Nakwema Trailway shared the engineer’s recommendation to position the trail of the east side of US-31. The Nakwema (nah-KWAY-mah) Trailway, linking Charlevoix and Traverse City, will provide a vital, non-motorized connection between pristine freshwater shorelines, rolling dunes, and pastoral farmlands. The Trailway will provide critical foundational infrastructure for happy, healthy, resilient individuals and communities that make up the quintessential towns, villages, and rich cultural heritage that define northwest Lower Michigan.
