29 Apr Spring Lake Park, Petoskey State Park Remain Closed; Pedaling with a Purpose Moving to Trail Center

Like many other northern Michigan outdoor projects, renovations at Petoskey State Park and Spring Lake Park were delayed by a ferocious winter.

The state park will remain closed through mid-May, while Spring Lake Park will open around Memorial Day.

The Spring Lake Park closure is particularly challenging since it’s the headquarters for Cindy Okerlund’s Kids Pedaling with a Purpose program. To accommodate her month-long endeavor, the Packy Offield Trail Center will become the program’s hub of operations.

That means throughout May, the Trails Center will be a busy hive of activity as area fourth graders move from learning station to learning station before setting out for Oden State Fish Hatchery on the North Western State Trail.

Remember, Spring Lake Park will remain closed through mid-May, and the Trails Center’s parking space will be scarce as we accommodate Kids Pedaling with a Purpose. Neither area will be available for park-and-riders. As an alternative, the Tannery Creek Trailhead is just around the corner, behind D&W Fresh Market.
