29 Jul Trail of the Week: Little Traverse Wheelway East
Traveling between Petoskey and Harbor Springs is perfect for the explorer who likes to make a lot of stops. Between businesses and parks, there is plenty to see and do!
Starting behind D&W Fresh Market, at the Tannery Creek Trailhead, on the east side of Petoskey, you have the option to venture into the Petoskey State Park or follow the Little Traverse Wheelway, where you’ll pass our Building! Continuing north along M-119 you get close to planes at the airport, and if you are lucky, you might see them in action. From there, you cross M-119 and head onward to Harbor Springs with a beautiful bayfront and plenty of places to eat and shop. Note, the trail ends at Kosequat Park in Harbor Springs, if you continue through the park, head down the hill (M-119) for 3/4 of a mile, you’ll reach downtown or head along Pine St, taking a left at Arbor.
As we head away from Petoskey, we choose the dirt path to the left into Petoskey State Park. The trail meets with road as you ride through the campground. Left to the beach, right to the Little Traverse Wheelway! Some parts of the Little Traverse Wheelway are on the shoulder of M-119 – there is plenty of space, and lines are marked to keep drivers in their lane Here comes the Harbor Springs Airport! Need any water along the way? Once past the airport, you cross M-119 at the light… … and continue your journey to Harbor Springs There is even a little library! Once into Harbor, the trail weaves away from M-119 Where you cross Lake St and into Kosequat Park Once in downtown Harbor Springs, there are plenty of well marked cross walks Make sure to get a cookie at Tom’s Mom’s! Heading Back towards Petoskey, this time taking the Wheelway instead of heading into the Petoskey State Park More sections along M-119 where the trail is on the shoulder You can also access the North Western State Trail from the Little Traverse Wheelway! Here we are! Little Traverse Bay And back to the Tannery Creek Trailhead
