24 Jul 18th Annual Indian River Kayak-Bike Biathlon

Sunday’s conditions were perfect for the 18th annual Indian River Kayak-Bike Biathlon.
Seventy-four athletes in a range of ages lined up their colorful kayaks along DeVoe Beach in preparation for the 9 a.m. mass start. When the horn sounded, they sprinted to their boats and headed into the Inland Waterway for a 2.24-mile paddle. Upon return, participants mounted their bicycles and set out for an 11.68-mile ride on the North Central State Trail to Topinabee and back.
The overall winner of this timed race was 61-year-old Jonathan Morgan, who logged a time of 56:33.7.
Complete official results can be found here. Facebook photo albums from the event can be found here and here.

Participants, community volunteers, and area sponsors come together to make this Trails Council fundraising event a success. We’re very grateful for everyone’s help and interest in this fun race, which showcases one of our most popular inland trails – not to mention the Indian River community.
Our sponsors include Fernelius Auto Group, the Waterway Inn, Northern Michigan Sports Medicine Centers, Center City Gym, Northland Brewing, Ken’s Village Market, Awakon Federal Credit Union, Indian River Family Dentistry, Sturgeon River Paddle Sports, The Summer Store, Latitude 45 Bicycles & Fitness, and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council.
Proceeds from the Biathlon directly benefit trail development in the northern lower peninsula.
