Trails Council Funds Enabling BC-CVX Trail Progress

Support from Top of Michigan Trails Council is sustaining momentum on the still incomplete Boyne City-Charlevoix Trail. The Charlevoix County Trail Team and the Trails Council are collaborating to keep making progress on engineering design on the final sections needed to complete the trail.

Late this summer the Charlevoix County Commission unexpectedly hit pause on entering into an engineering contract for the final phases of the trail. But in October commissioners agreed to let the Trail Team keep things moving.

Led by Steve Van Dam, the Trail Team, assisted by the Trails Council, is charting a way forward. “The community was so excited when Phase 3 of the trail was completed earlier this year and we don’t want to lose that momentum,” said Trails Council Executive Director Brent Bolin.

The Trails Council and the Charlevoix County Trail Team are now working directly with the engineering team on next steps to ensure the benefits of everyone’s investment in the Boyne City-Charlevoix Trail are realized via trail completion.

The Trails Council and the Trail Team are currently trying to raise about $100,000 for surveying and initial engineering design work on the final phase. “These upfront costs are an unfortunate reality of the trail building process, but this initial work is a necessary step before applying for grants that can take the project even farther,” said Bolin. “The Trail Team is meeting on a regular basis and are moving forward with putting together print material for distribution, and a PowerPoint presentation, to help build public awareness of the momentum that is building around finishing the trail,” Steve Van Dam said. “This will be a long process. Patience will be required, but we are moving forward step by step.”

A ribbon cutting will officially open Phase 3 of the Boyne City-Charlevoix Trail on on Friday, Nov. 21 – see below for details.
