03 Jun Petoskey Installing Posts on U.S. 31 Road Shoulder

For those who choose to use the U.S. 31 road shoulder to connect with the Little Traverse Wheelway west of the Miracle Mile washout, here is an update. (This detour is not recommended for children, those who aren’t used to road riding, or those who are unsteady on their bicycles.)

The City of Petoskey has received an MDOT permit for the placement of the U.S. 31 delineator posts and are planning on installation this week. However, MDOT is going to improve the rumble strips at Eppler Road, so post installation will occur in two phases. The first phase will be west of Eppler, where MDOT is not doing any work. This will happen this week. The second phase will occur after MDOT has completed their work, with anticipated completion in mid-June.

Regarding a workaround for the Wheelway’s closed boardwalk section in Charlevoix County, trail users should AVOID using the U.S. 31 road shoulder to connect. With a rumble strip on the outside and a long guardrail on the inside, this mile-long segment of road shoulder is narrow and extremely dangerous.
