Petoskey Realigning Wheelway at Bayfront Park East

Our partners at the City of Petoskey are ready to begin realignment of the Little Traverse Wheelway in Bayfront Park East.

In the first week of April, workers will close the section of the Wheelway extending from Lime Kiln Pond to Boyne Country Sports. That section will remain closed through mid-May, diverting trail traffic to the U.S. 31 pedestrian underpass near downtown Petoskey. From there, trail users can connect with Petoskey’s Downtown Greenway. Trail users can then reconnect with the Wheelway at MacDonald Drive and U.S. 31, near Kilwin’s Ice Cream, Chocolate, and Fudge Shop.

Users won’t have access to the area until the trail is completed. There will be signage directing users to use the pedestrian tunnel to the Downtown Greenway north corridor.

According to the city, the new trail section will be 10 feet wide, made of concrete, and will be eight to 10 feet farther inland than the current path. Having the path further inland will protect from future high water and shoreline erosion. The shoreline side will be vegetated with native, low-grow plantings specifically suited for shorelines.

Stay tuned for more details and updates!
