22 Jul Trail of the Week: Burt Lake Trail
Although the Burt Lake Trail is still in progress of being built, the trail along the west side of Burt Lake, from Brutus Road to the northern part of the lake, along Riggsville Road is ready for use! The best part about this section is that on both ends where there is parking, there are also additional trails to explore! The trail is a combination of crushed limestone and shared bike lane, and paved trail on the northern end. Learn more here.
Parking at the northern end is at “The Gorge” on the University of Michigan Biological Station’s property, with trails worth exploring. On the southern end, there are two options for parking, Maple Bay State Campground or Cheboiganing Nature Preserve.
One option for parking is at Maple Bay State Campground Heading East from Maple Bay Before you get to the second parking option on the southern end Another option is Cheboiganing Nature Preserve. Here you can also head out for a hike on Little Traverse Conservancy’s Preserve Continuing East/North, there is a shared bike lake. You’ll wander along West Burt Lake Road, along the road It doesn’t look like it, but at points, you’ll be able to see Burt Lake! On the northern end, the trail turns to pavement Along Riggsville Road I wonder how long this has been here? Trails at “The Gorge” – This is another great place to park! There are a lot of steps down But the scenery is worth it Further west This is where the trail meets East Burt Lake Road – more trail to come along East Burt Lake Road as the trail continues to be built!
