About the Trail

The Flyer’s story

The concept for the non-motorized trail that connects the villages of Central Lake and Bellaire began back in 2020, driven by a community desire for better connectivity in the area. In 2022, a feasibility study was completed, emphasizing the project’s viability and the positive impact it could have on the region. A dedicated stakeholder group has since been established, including members from all municipalities, local businesses, and community organizations, all working collaboratively to realize this vision.

The project is named “The Flyer,” honoring the historic train service that once traveled through the area, connecting communities and enhancing regional transportation. The actual trail cannot follow the same track bed, but will be designed to go along M-88 within the road right-of-way. “This trail represents more than just a pathway; it’s an opportunity for our residents to connect with nature and with each other,” said Matt Gabris, a member of The Flyer Board. The trail is designed to enhance accessibility for all residents, encouraging a healthier lifestyle while promoting environmentally friendly travel options.
